Al-Ahli 2-0 Al Fateh: Two Toney penalties give hosts comfortable win

Two penalties from Ivan Toney gave Al-Ahli a routine 2-0 win over bottom club Al Fateh in the Saudi Pro League on Friday.

The home side were awarded a penalty after just 12 minutes when Hussain Qasim brought down Riyad Mahrez, and the defender was also given his marching orders for being the last man back when he fouled the Algerian.

Toney dispatched the spot-kick, with Al-Ahli continuing to dominate for large parts of the first half but unable to find a second goal.

Despite being in control, the home side were also reduced to 10 men before the end of the first half as Saad Yaslam was handed two bookings in a matter of minutes.

Nevertheless, the hosts’ second goal would arrive midway through the second half as Ziyad Al Johani was fouled by Nawaf Al Aqidi, with Toney stepping up to score his second of the game from the spot.

Matthias Jaissle’s men generated an expected goals (xG) figure of 3.15, with six of their 17 shots on target, with the visitors managing an xG of just 1.03 despite also having six efforts on target.

Al-Ahli remain fifth in the Saudi Pro League on 38 points, with Al Fateh staying at the foot of the table.

Data Debrief: Toney continues fine penalty record

Toney had a reputation as a penalty specialist before moving to the Gulf, and he was spot on here.

Toney scored 11 of the 12 penalties he took in the Premier League for Brentford, and 28 of the 30 he took throughout his career in English football overall.

Between his senior debut for Northampton in November 2012 and his move to Al-Ahli last year, only 13 players in the English game converted more spot-kicks than Toney – Harry Kane led the way with 45 for Tottenham.
